Beijing Goes “BOO!” Halloween in the ‘Jing
| From [08.10.31] Beijing Halloween |
Best convo of Halloween night:
Jimmy: “Aw, I miss America.”
Me: “Why?”
Jimmy: “Sexy cats.”
Ah, yes. Sexy cats. And sexy nurses, sexy construction workers, sexy vampires, sexy sluts. Oops, did I say that? BTW, if you haven’t watched this video, do yourself a favor and watch it now.
Being my favorite holiday, I was a bit scared for Halloween. Not by the possibility of ghouls and goblins stalking me in the wee hours of the morning, but rather that a dearth of Halloween mirth would befall this city. But what was I thinking? This is China. And don’t you know, probably each and every piece of that Halloween costume you ordered online was MADE IN CHINA! Is Halloween fun in Beijing? To quote Sarah Palin — who, consequently, I wanted to dress up as for Halloween but knew the joke would fall flat on most non-Americans — “You betcha!”
I had an app due the day before and a Chinese test the day of Halloween, so costumes where thrown together quickly thanks to the Korean market nearby. Chinese markets are like ginormous costume closets! I took the “sexy” outfit to a new level, donning an all-green get-up that transformed me into 绿茶, or a (sexy) bottle of green tea. Sean rode the ridiculous slope even further, constructing a giant box of his favorite snacks, Orion chocolate pies. The funny thing was that none of the foreigners really got our outfits. But to the locals, out costumes where genius. Sean must have had half of Beijing flock to him for a photo. Note to self: To win Chinese friends, dress up as snack food.
After a pre-party at our pad — just like old times! — featuring a magnum of Changde sparkling wine (the cost? $25!), we hit up the Yen Fetish Party. Now, before those smutty thoughts start creeping in, there wasn’t really anything fetish about this party, unless you consider drunken young people in ridiculous get-ups fetish. Hmm, actually …
Anyway, I’ll let the party pics speak for themselves from this point on, as they do a better job than I could at the party’s happenings. I bounced around 2AM for another party at the 798 art district, a cool warehouse-type shindig featuring the local DJ legends in the Acupuncture crew. I was tired and cold, so instead of holding out for late night at White Rabbit, I grabbed a cab to dreamland.
